Hi all,
As a brand new member of this forum, I hope to acquire some valuable knowledge from the pro collectors out there pertaining to my small niche collection of 2 vintage college football helmets.
First off, I'm attempting to build a collection of a range of vintage helmets from the college I attended in the early 70's... Carroll College of Waukesha Wisconsin. Carroll College was the very first college in Wisconsin, opening in 1846. So there is early history here and football was prominent starting in the late 1890s. In the photo attached, the helmet on the right with white painted-on cross stripes is a Stall & Dean 5468 as marked on the inside leather head pad. Acquired it 45 years ago from a cache of old equipment left in a duffle bag in the annals of the college basement. I have no doubt whatsoever this is a Carroll helmet as the orange and white scheme are the Carroll colors. Archival photos I have found do show team members playing in those 2 tone helmets in the early 30s.
That being said, the second helmet (on the left )I just acquired from a football coach at Carroll. I was thrilled when I got the call that someone had sent him this helmet and he knew I'd be interested. The key to this one is that the players name was written on the inside top head pad along with the year 1930! I did intense research on the player and in fact did find he played at Carroll as a QB and his freshman season was 1930. I found the Stall & Dean embossing on the front forepanel like the other has, but no catalogue ( serial ) number markings anywhere. Certainly, one of the major differences are the chin straps what I feel are original to each helmet. Hopefully these are key to dating this pair?
So, after this long winded basic description of both, which model of helmet came first? I feel there is not much separation in the years these were made, and I would guess many helmets of different years were in circulation on one team at the same time.
One note...I thought it astonishing that another helmet surfaced of nearly the same year that I already had. So I had to grab it. Now I want to hone in and date these!
Sorry for such an extensive deliberation but I could not find any real history of Stall & Dean helmet evolution that covered the middle 20's through the 30s.
Can anyone out there help with the release dates of these two slightly different models??
thank you much,
Bob
